"This concert is my celebration of the music of Billy Strayhorn, the composer of 'Take the A-Train' and 'Lush Life,' as well as Duke Ellington's orchestrator and arranger. I premiered Variations on Strayhorn in 2001 at Lincoln Center's 'American Songbook Series' and was overwhelmed by the audience's reception as well as the critical acclaim it received (see press page). The original concert has since culminated in various engagements around the country, several TV appearances, and the companion CD, 'Day Dream, Variations on Strayhorn' (see CD page). This concert is a great introduction for those less familiar with Strayhorn's work, and a comprehensive evening for those fans who cherish both his famous standards and his lesser known gems." - Darius |

"De
Haas has found the key to making jazz a theatrical experience. The actor
proves to be a singer with an amazing vocal range and dexterity, and a
performer who can reveal the sorrows, pains and joys of the composer's
richly layered repertoire with an intensity and honesty that easily envelops
and mesmerizes the listener."

Mr.
de Haas created a show that transformed familiar and obscure tunes alike
into something electrically thrilling. This extraordinary program (the
high point so far in the series) has to be recorded and videotaped, perhaps
for PBS's "Great Performances."
