Atlanta's Alliance Theatre has re-conceived Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar,” as a gospel version, and everything about it is huge, gargantuan, titanic— especially the choir —and boy, can they sing. Their sound is thrilling. It's the formidable talents of the lead actor-singers of this production that rescue it from mere hugeness: Darius de Haas performing “Gethsemane”; Eric Jordan Young (in a colorful costume!) as a flamboyant Herod; Daryll Jovan Williams showing us the truth of his character as he whispers/sings his version of “I Don't Know How to Love Him.”

“Devout apostles of musical theater should flock to the Alliance Theatre for Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL as soon as possible. Watching Darius de Haas’ performance as Jesus, particularly his solo of “Gethsemane,” offers such breathtaking thrills, it’s like being present at the creation. Anxiety, indignation and other emotions seem to ripple across his features, while he raises a voice that seems capable of shaking heaven’s foundations.”
