"The
night's biggest crowd-pleaser was her version of the Billy Preston-Syreeta
Wright ballad, "With You I'm Born Again." Vanessa Williams brought out her co-star from her 1994 Broadway production
of "Kiss of the Spider Woman," Darius
de Haas, to sing the Preston part, and de Haas gave it new life.
Whereas Preston sang the song slow and straightforward, de Haas played with
it, giving it more passion. Williams had no trouble replicating Wright's
vocal part, and she caught de Haas' fire, turning it into a song I hope
we'll hear on the radio."
