"The
great jazz singer and pianist Andy Bey has a voice that comes in at least
three sections. The lower end is an aggressive blues bark that delivers
scat improvisations in abruptly phrased volleys. At the top is an exotic,
swerving falsetto. But it is Mr. Bey's middle register that defines his
sound. A mellow, crooning baritone with a voluptuously rounded vibrato,
it is a film noir voice: languid, mysterious and surpassingly beautiful.
When Mr. Bey lingers over the lyrics of ''Little Girl Blue,'' you are
reminded of the very young Nina Simone, who brought a similarly pure sound
and intense moodiness to the Rodgers and Hart standard."
